Your Pooches and CBD

Fatimah J. – guest writer for Joey Hemp

For those of us who have had to make that choice, the heart-breaking decision to say goodbye to a beloved friend, companion and member of your family, it’s something you never forget. In hindsight, you wonder “what more could I have done?” and question yourself, seeking answers that never satisfy.

When Joey Hemp asked me to share my personal experience, I immediately thought of my friend Faye. Her beloved rescue dog Danielle had been diagnosed with a vicious osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and her options were limited. I distinctly remember that call, heard the heartbreak in her voice and wanted to help in any way I could.

I know Danielle doesn’t have much time left. The oncologist said we can try chemotherapy, undergo an operation to remove the cancer—or her leg at the hip—or we can go the pain management route until it’s time for her to go.

I’ve already done the first two, and they didn’t work. More importantly, she was really sick on chemo and it made no impact whatsoever. Her fur fell out, she completely lost her appetite and her urine turned our lawn yellow or killed off the grass in great patches.

I can’t imagine what it is doing to her body. We took her for the op, but they could only remove 90% of the tumour a few months ago, and it’s grown back bigger than ever. She loves to run and play, removing her leg at her age (9) doesn’t seem right. I want to manage her pain levels and the prescribed medication is wrecking havoc on her appetite.”

While Faye relayed her story, I could see the process of her journey unfolding. I knew Faye wouldn’t put her beloved Danielle to sleep unless she was in such a bad way, she had no choice. She felt medical marijuana was her last avenue of hope, something few traditional vets advocate., Danielle and Faye were soulmates, you could instantly see this bond within the first minutes of meeting them and I knew she was placing great faith and trust that this “controversial” option might help her pooch.

“So, what do you think?”

I heard the catch in her voice and knew what she was subtly asking. She had read up on CBD treatment, especially regarding its medical usefulness on chronic medication patients, both human and animal, and while hoping for the best, she just wanted Danielle to spend her last months free from pain.

As a company who prides itself on carrying the highest quality brands of CBD oil, Joey Hemp has made valuable products available to those in need. The production and sale of high-quality CBD oil for medical use is something their suppliers have long fought for, and thankfully the public now has access to valuable CBD oil resources.

Faye’s vet had prescribed the standard anti-inflammatory medication, but despite this, Faye could see Danielle’s struggle to get up every morning.

“She’s a fighter and she won’t give up until it’s her time to go. I just want her to feel more at ease, more like her old self. I have a vet who’s also a homeopath and they have used medical marijuana on a number of patients. They’re optimistic CBD treatment will reduce her pain and inflammation.”

Danielle’s story is becoming quite common. Despite the fact that Faye fed her the best free-range and organic foods, Danielle’s genetic predisposition, even as a mixed-breed pooch rescued from a shelter, meant she carried the markers for certain types of cancer.

I’ve noticed more people are willing to try the unconventional treatment route, and we have seen an increasing success rate in alleviating the symptoms of numerous conditions, including cancers, heart murmurs, arthritis and more. No doubt there are many sceptics, but thanks to the internet, life-saving information is now available at the touch of a button.

Dr Edward Bassingthwaighte, a holistic vet from Australia, was featured in the Dogs Naturally magazine for his CBD oil treatment on canine and feline patients. One of his patients, an old Jack Russell, had a severe heart murmur and quite painful arthritis. Under Bassingthwaighte’s guidance, the pooch received a whole plant extract containing CBD oil, as well as some THC which was “diluted in 10 ml of cold pressed hemp seed oil.” The vet carefully watched his patient and noted that after a month’s treatment, he was more active, seemed happier, and best of all, the heart murmur was less severe. It seemed CDB oil benefits weren’t a fairy tale after all. Bassingthwaighte goes on, “I simply can’t explain the improved heart murmur. They normally don’t get better.”

CBD oil can be used as treatment for several conditions, including seizures, nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer, and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions in dogs. Under proper dosage, vets have confirmed CBD oil side effects are mostly non-existent.

Dr. Tim Shu, founder and CEO of VETCBD in California, explains that relief is experienced when cannabinoids in hemp interact with the endocannabinoid system. “It’s a series of receptors that run throughout the body,” he says. “The cannabinoids interact with the receptors in the body and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea.”[1]

Keep in mind that to use CBD oil for this care, you need the following:

  • A qualified vet (they also call themselves holistic vets but be sure to check their credentials) to administer the CBD treatment. It can be in the form of oil, tincture or treats, and these must be produced specifically for the animal concerned.
  • Excellent quality medical marijuana or grade-A CBD hemp oil: you’re looking for reputable companies that sell organic, non-GMO, pesticide-free CBD products.
  • An ability to view CBD oil treatment in a realistic manner: many traditional medications do not cure illness, especially those like cancer. The holistic approach asks that you place less stress on the body where possible, especially when using strong meds. While many people do continue taking traditional medications, like those used in chemotherapy, it has been noted that CBD treatment can be a health boost, especially when the immune system is compromised.

For anyone interested in purchasing CBD oil that meets the quality mentioned above, please follow this link. Many customers favor the Bacon Flavored CBD oil for pets. I’m sure some of you have pets with the sharpest noses – our bacon-flavored tincture delivers relief while masking any hint of scents that may make your pet suspicious.

*PLEASE NOTE: Before using any CBD product as treatment for specific conditions, consult your holistic vet. We do not advocate inexperienced individuals experimenting with CBD treatment and have included the contact details for the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy.
